Category Manager

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director, Global Vendor Management, the role of the Category Manager is responsible for overall management of a specific category of spend within the Procurement organization. The Category Manager holds in-depth industry knowledge of market trends, vendor landscapes, and product roadmaps. The Category Manager works in partnership with key Finastra stakeholders to build strategic forward looking Category Plans, active monitoring of performance, risk management, and relationship management of vendors. The Category Manager also owns the overall relationship with vendors in their category, and they work closely with key stakeholders managing the day-to-day operational vendor relationship.

Job Description / Responsibilities

  • Remain current with market & industry trends through relationships with vendors as well as market research

  • Stay current on the changing vendor & product landscape (market leaders, emerging technologies, etc..)

  • Develop, champion, and ensure implementation of ideas that will optimize TCO year-over-year

  • Ensure vendor performance monitoring practices are in place for key vendors

  • Constantly monitor and manage risks with material vendor relationships

  • Work in partnership with vendor relationship owners within Finastra to monitor contract compliance

  • Work with Strategic Sourcing and Operational Purchasing teams to streamline and improve Procurement processes to meet internal customer standards for quality and timeliness

  • Develop and implement Category Plans on an annual basis

  • Establish strategic relationships with Finastra Leaders and vendors to ensure successful implementation and support of Category Plans

  • Through effective communication and relationship management, move transactional vendor relationships to truly strategic partnerships based on trust, robust contractual agreements, and clear roles and responsibilities for all involved


Skills, Knowledge & Experience


  • Minimum 5 years progressive experience in Strategic Sourcing or Vendor Management

  • University Degree or equivalent work experience; PMAC or equivalent certification would be an asset

  • In-depth knowledge of the applicable spend category (vendors, technology, products, market trends)

  • Experience in leading and developing teams would be considered an asset

  • In-depth experience with contract language and experience in drafting contracts, liaising with Legal, and negotiating contract terms and conditions while both delivering results and maintaining internal and external relationships

  • Experience in presenting to senior levels in the organization

  • Building relationships and collaborating with internal stakeholders to promote Procurement within the organization to instill best practices

  • Experience in strategizing and leading complex vendor negotiations

Skills & Knowledge

  • Ability to strategize and lead complex vendor negotiations that support the business strategy

  • Ability to effectively strategize, develop and manage vendor contracts to optimize costs and ensure vendor/supplier performance

  • Manage and develop vendor relationships; leverage vendors as a source of innovation and growth

  • Ability to promote a positive and collaborative work environment and team spirit in the department

  • Excellent communicator of procurement project/initiative findings and able to effectively present final recommendations (written and verbal) to all levels of management

  • Ability to be ambitious and think ahead, identify the critical path, apply project management methodology, and achieve results through others

  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to navigate ambiguity, make recommendations and present them in a concise and logical way

  • Customer service mindset; solid interpersonal skills and integrity

  • Ability to communicate clearly, to the point, and with conviction

  • Demonstrated drive for results and sense of urgency

  • Comfortable under stress and change management
