Job Overview :

McDermott is seeking a business-minded Senior Counsel to join the Offshore Middle East Legal team in either Dubai or Doha. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, have excellent communication skills with a minimum of five years of post-qualification experience in-house or with a reputable law firm. The role reports to the Vice-President Legal in Dubai.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • The Senior Counsel will deal with a variety of legal matters and will provide overall in-house legal support for McDermott’s Offshore Middle East Business Line, with particular emphasis on the following:

  • Provide legal support for tenders and bidding for new work with McDermott’s customers, including review and negotiation of terms and conditions, input to the proposal risk management process and briefing management

  • Support existing projects, including advising on variation and EOT submissions, supply chain agreements/claims and other commercial/legal issues

  • Management of litigation and disputes, as required

  • Ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations

  • Developing and delivering training for employees on contracts and compliance topics

  • Working with the Insurance Department in overall management of claims and insurance portfolio

  • Supporting McDermott’s sustainability goals, including review and negotiation of contracts with service providers for sustainability initiatives

  • Participating in management review meetings and departmental meetings and initiatives

  • Participating in non-legal initiatives in areas such as safety, well-being, DEI and sustainability

  • Perform other tasks and duties delegated or assigned by the VP-Legal

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school (LLB or equivalent)

  • At least five years of relevant experience

  • Transactional experience in construction/engineering, offshore oil & gas or the maritime sector

  • High degree of motivation, excellent organizational and communication skills and strong academic background

  • Able to work with and communicate effectively with non-lawyers

  • Fluent in spoken and written business / legal English

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

  • Preferred candidate is already present in Dubai or Doha

  • Preferred candidate has experience working in the offshore oil and gas industry

  • Proficiency in Arabic is an advantage but not essential
