Job Description

General Scope of Duties

Under the direction of the Mechanical Trades Manager, perform highly skilled trades duties in a variety of HVAC /R trade work. Performs skilled maintenance and/or construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices of College facilities and equipment. Makes estimates of time, personnel, and material required on assigned tasks; keeps necessary records; performs duties related to the trade or trade areas as required.

These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that affect campus operations. Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends or holidays).

These positions also require participation in the Weekly On-Call Rotation Schedule; when assigned to the on-call rotation, calls must be responded to during the on-call assignment within 15 minutes.

General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works under the limited supervision of a Building Trades Manager

  • Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating and refrigeration.

  • Operates, maintains, repairs, installs, modifies and assembles air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon or chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means.

  • Determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas.

  • Uses and interprets a psychrometric chart.

  • Controls and measures air flow, room air changes and room pressurizing.

  • Monitors computerized control systems, building automated systems ( BAS ).

  • Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks; adds water treatment chemicals to boilers.

  • May install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for this type of equipment; may inspect and repair steam traps fed by the main system at various locations.

  • May remove pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA approved methods.

  • Assure compliance with appropriate safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, state and local codes, regulations and requirements

  • Confer with members of the College community to resolve problems in a pleasant and respectful manner.

  • Operate a service vehicle as required to perform duties.

    Education and Skills

  • Must possess a valid State of Connecticut D-2 or S-1 license, or higher

  • Four (4) years of general experience in a particular trade area.

  • A combination of education and experience that provides a demonstrated knowledge of skilled HVAC /R principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment.

  • Interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records, interpret and read blueprints.

  • Ability to utilize computer software ( CMMS ).

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Salary Range $31.76 ($31.40 base rate + .36 cents license)
