POSITION SUMMARY:

The Child Life Specialist provides a therapeutic environment for the hospitalized child and family. The CLS evaluates the adjustment to the hospital environment and provides emotional support to patients and their families. The CLS acts as a resource for members of the healthcare team. The quality of service given will adhere to the philosophy and objectives of the hospital

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential core function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, experience, and ability necessary to perform this job.

ESSENTIAL FUNTIONS:

  1. Provides a therapeutic environment, working with families/support groups.

  2. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental age and age specific care, chronic care/special needs.

  3. Uses therapeutic techniques to prepare patients for treatments/procedures to reduce stress and trauma.

  4. Assesses the child’s developmental abilities and adjustment to hospital setting, for the therapeutic plan of care.

  5. Evaluate and documents on patient progress and adaptation to hospitalization.

  6. Researchers the latest trends concerning children in the hospital environment.

  7. Act as a resource for other departments in the organization.

  8. Assists with the general maintenance of toys, equipment, and storage area with the evaluation and purchasing of program materials.

  9. Supports the facility’s Standards of Performance and ICARE values.

EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

· Bachelor Degree required from an accredited institution, in Child/Human Development, Child Life or related therapeutic/health field.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Certification through the Child Life Council.

· American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification required at hire*

*Instructor certifications interchangeable with required certifications

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:

  • Minimum 1-2 years experience working with sick children preferably in a acute health care setting.

  • Analytical skills including a working knowledge of basic statistics and statistical analysis methodologies. · Knowledge of body substance isolation CUSTOMERS SERVED: All employees, staff of Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center in both clinical and non-clinical departments, including patients/families, physicians, volunteers, agency, contract, students and the community. COMPETENCIES: The competencies identified for this position are summarized and reviewed periodically throughout employment. The required behaviors and measurement associated with core, job specific, age specific, and management (if applicable) competencies are maintained in the department education file. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position is classified as medium work which is defined as exerting up to 50lbs force occasionally, 20lbs frequently and 10lbs constantly.

HCA Florida Gulf Coast Hospital is a 238-bed acute care hospital. For 40 years, we have served Bay County and the surrounding communities. We are an accredited facility offering comprehensive care. This includes advanced cardiac assessment and treatment. We offer certified women's services. Our hospital has dedicated spaces for adult and pediatric emergency services. We are certified in Advanced Primary Stroke Care. Our hospital is accredited as a Comprehensive Breast Care Center. We are the area's only Accredited Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI and Resuscitation. Other services that we offer include orthopedic care and joint replacement, robotic surgery, cardiac, vascular, and interventional services. We are home to the only Pediatric ER in the community. We have the only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in the region. Together, we continue to raise the bar in healthcare.
