Job Summary

The pay range for this position is $29.00 USD per hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.

BASIC SUMMARY:

Oversee the care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments. Assist in monitoring the animal areas for adherence to regulatory agencies (i.e.: AAALAC, USDA, CDC) requirements and adherence to industry standards for animal care and welfare.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assist department management in addressing unique and difficult animal care and welfare issues.

• Oversee the basic day to day care of laboratory animals, facilities, and animal environments.

• Inspect the animal facilities and animal room environments in assigned areas to ensure that they meet acceptable standards. Submit work orders for improvements as necessary.

• Evaluate animal environments for compliance with husbandry and animal care standards as set forth by AAALAC, USDA, company SOP’s, and other relevant agencies. Make suggestions to department management for improvements based on observations and involvement.

• Administer, review, and recommend possible improvements in animal welfare or husbandry programs, projects, and/or processes as assigned.

• Perform daily quality assurance duties for animal welfare and husbandry, report findings to Study Supervisors and department management, and communicate animal welfare issues to technical team members as appropriate.

• Participate in team meetings and provide feedback to staff.

• Perform animal census and document location of all animals to meet requirements of regulatory agencies (i.e.: USDA, CDC).

• Observe animals for possible illness or behavioral abnormalities. Work with veterinarians to coordinate the treating of animals, administering prescribed medications, and collecting of data.

• Work closely with technical staff to complete all husbandry and pre-study projects.

• Work closely with Study Supervisors/Senior Study Supervisors on coordinating daily work schedules and tasks for technical teams. Review and assess work schedules to ensure program resources are utilized to complete objectives/tasks effectively.

• Ensure availability of equipment for essential animal care. Ensure animal treatment rooms and equipment are well stocked with supplies and appropriately maintained.

• Administer and monitor the administration of TB tests on animals; read and document TB results. Review required logs and keep records as required.

• Provide animal care/husbandry expertise and technical guidance as needed.

• May participate in the Surgical Medicine Program, as assigned.

• Provide direct daily supervision and review work of assigned departmental employees to ensure accuracy and to ensure adherence to pertinent departmental policies, practices, and procedures [SOPs, safety procedures and biosafety protocols.] Schedule and prioritize workload of group members.

Job Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Education: Associate’s degree (A.A. /A.S.) or equivalent in a related discipline.

• Experience: 3 years related experience in animal husbandry and welfare. 1-2 years direct experience with relevant species preferred. 1 year supervisory experience preferred. Experience working in a GLP regulated environment preferred.

• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

• Certification/Licensure: ALAT required, LAT preferred.

• Other: Working knowledge of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP’s). Familiar with federal regulations and guidelines relating to the care of laboratory animals including facility inspection, procurement, and distribution of laboratory animals. Knowledge of animal care and welfare standards as defined by AAALAC, USDA, etc. Computer literate.
