Overview

The Safety Specialist will assist in developing and implementing environmental, health, and safety programs and policies, train personnel on new protocols, and ensure that the organization is compliant in safety regulations.

The ideal candidate is willing to learn and is passionate about health and safety. This individual will bring knowledge of OSHA, WISHA, OR-OSHA, Cal OSHA and relevant standards and regulations. The Safety Specialist must be an excellent communicator with a strong ability to collaborate with various roles within the operation through a commitment to the highest safety standards.

This role is considered part of the Operations Team and reports to the Safety Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Support and promote the Environment, Health, and Safety programs.

  • Travel to various job sites throughout the Western United Sates to perform routine monitoring, audits, and create corrective actions to identify and mitigate safety issues.

  • Assist in creating and coordinating training programs or media to increase proficiency in safe practices and promote safety.

  • Partner with the safety director to complete new employee safety training.

  • Work on job sites to ensure safety of our crews while planning and executing the site safety requirements.

  • Maintain all onsite required documentation related to safety, i.e. accident reports, inspection reports, training logs, inspection forms, reporting.

  • Work with subcontractors on job sites, as directed by the safety director, in continually assessing organization safety processes addressing safety issues.

  • Support project teams during pre-construction with preparing for all safety requirements and coordinate with all subcontractors to ensure they are prepared and compliant with all project safety requirements.

  • Maintain detailed detail knowledge of assigned projects and promote our customer safety programs.

  • Review Site Specific Safety Plans and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs).

  • Conduct onsite behavioral observations and on-site training.

  • Support environmental, safety regulatory, and compliance inspections.

  • Assist in management of Drug Free Workplace and fit for duty programs.

  • Assist with Safety Administration, TBT distribution, safety recordkeeping and LMS management.

  • Participate in the investigation of accidents and injuries compiling information in preparation of material and evidence for organization use.

  • Coordinate and manage worker’s compensation cases including coordination of return-to-work with Human Resources.

  • Position will occasionally require the ability to work extended hours and weekends when needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in construction health and safety.

  • Working knowledge of OSHA CFR 1926 standards and state construction safety regulations.

  • Ability to perform onsite jobsite inspections.

  • First-Aid/CPR & OSHA 30 certifications.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word, and Access).

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related science.

  • Experience in heavy industrial construction, hydropower, manufacturing, and/or pulp and paper.

  • Commitment to high safety and environmental standards.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively in a highly interactive team environment.

  • Detail and results oriented.

  • Ability to perform under pressure.

Working Conditions:

  • Frequent travel (50% or more) will be required to support project safety.

  • This role requires the ability to utilize, maintain, and wear all PPE as required by JR Merit, the client, and any other applicable regulatory agency or management directive.

  • At times, work may be performed at a jobsite where additional training, certifications, or clearances may be needed to comply with jobsite requirements.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Compensation Range:

$80,000 - $95,000
